Why do Women Always get Short Changed?

Today I read about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Her bravery to share her story and courage to stand up for justice is making history, especially for women. For 20 years, Lilly Ledbetter made 40 percent less than her male counterparts at Goodyear Tire. She sued Goodyear for unfair labor, won $3 million in damages but U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decision. You can read more about her story here.

Why is it so much harder for women, in general? Why do we have more battles to fight just to get a chance to be treated fairly? I want to remain optimistic and continue to believe that there isn’t any discrimination against females in this day and age, however stories like Lilly Ledbetter and studies by  Vivek WadhwaSilicon Valley: You and Some of Your VC’s have a Gender Problem” and “Addressing the Dearth of Female Entrepreneurs” do make me second guess what kind of society we live in today.
